How Do You Wash Shoes in the Washing Machine?

You can wash your shoes using your washing machine but it depends on the materials of your shoes. You can wash sneakers and trainers for as long as they have cloth-like materials. Leather, velvet, plastic and other non-cloth materials are better off washed manually.

It also depends on your washing machine. It is safer to wash it using a front loader or a high efficiency top loader as they do not have agitator to ruin your shoes. If these conditions are all okay to you, then start cleaning:

Step 1: Remove the shoe laces first. You can include the washing of the shoe laces together with your other laundry. If your shoes are very dirty with a lot of mud on its soles, you might want to give it a wash first in the bathroom to get rid of the mud. You also have to consider taking care of your washing machine. After all, it is more expensive than your shoes.

Step 2: Pick a good shoe detergent. You can also use mild soap solution if it is not too dirty as this will not make the color of the sneakers fade. There are a lot of sneaker detergents sold in the market so you have to make sure that it is appropriate for the materials used for your shoes. Read the back label for instructions and cautions.

Step 3: Place the solution in the detergent compartment or mix it up with water. Dissolve the detergent first in water before dumping your shoes. Use the gentle washing cycle.

Step 4: Allow it to dry in the lowest drying setting for up to 20 minutes only. If it is not yet dry completely, you can hang it someplace sunny to dry completely.

Step 5: If there are still some stains in your shoes, you might want to spot clean it first with a stain solution before dumping it in your washing machine to finish cleaning. Or better yet, sprinkle it first with baking soda before dumping it in your washing machine. Now you have clean and fresh-smelling shoes already.

Don’t forget to clean your washer tub. Shoes are really dirty and the germs and bacteria in it can stay in your washer’s drum. This will lead to a smelly and mold washing machine. In this case, you will have an even more difficult cleaning work cut out for you. Try these cleaning tips now.
